TATS CRU Bomb Lord and Taylor

July 14, 2008 – 1:27 pm

jacked from Racked

I picked up on this one kinda late obviously, (through Nylon magazine of all places) but after the obligatory Google I came up with this legendary hate from Animal:

The self-professed ‘Mural Kings’ created a series of soft-as-baby-shit graffiti-styled backdrops for the upscale retailer’s 5th Avenue window displays. The colorful diorama populated with whited-out, product showcasing mannequins makes for an extremely awkward juxtaposition. And since when does the Lord & Taylor buying demo find graffiti—even this watered down, gallery style—appealing? Although we understand that artists need to make a living and these guys do so by parlaying their once illegal painting skills for above the law commercial uses, it’s gotten to the point that they’ll do just about anything for anyone, as long as the check clears.

Yikes. The amount of jealousy, and backbiting amongst the (online) graffiti community is staggering. I don’t begrudge anyone their right to an opinion, but when I see rants like the above quoted, where grizzled veterans that have put in major work for years get shitted on for “killing” the art form I gotta call bullshit. No disrespect my dude, or whatever… but the metal plate in my forehead is telling me you don’t got half the stripes they do on a street level, so get the hate out your blood and let them do numbers. Ya dig?

Final Fantasy Jessica Drew Edition

July 11, 2008 – 10:28 pm

kiss of the spiderwoman

In the latest Secret Invasion offering from the House of Ideas, Tony Stark comes dangerously close to losing his grip on all reality when he’s trapped by the delectably drawn Spider Woman who just happens to be a no good filthy Skrull! (Suprise!) Since Bendis took over at Marvel with his work on New Avengers and more famously Avengers Disassembled, he’s been writing the character of Jessica Drew like a fan boy’s wet dream. She’s totally untrustworthy, scheming, pleading, deceitful, and also hot as a M-80. Combine all that with her basically being a triple agent for every shady organization in the Marvel Universe and it’s no wonder she’s the psychological (and visual) anchor for the hottest crossover event since Jordan got abused (nh?) by Iverson.

Age Of Ignorance: The Return

July 10, 2008 – 3:31 pm

sometimes I feel like a nut

I won’t bother reposting the infamous Fox video in which Jesse (”Hymie Town”) Jackson whispered to his mans and them about cutting or sticking Obama for the family jewels. That shit is just vulgar and so far beneath what a man of Jackson’s stature should ever be caught saying, it begs the question as to whether Jesse has actually lost his mind.

Being a conspiracy theorist of the first order, I immediately consulted my 40,000 gig bullshit detector and came to the conclusion that like much of the rap industry and WWE content, this was a staged event (a lousy one at that). There’s no question in my mind that Jesse was paid to make that *wink wink* off camera remark that was coincidentally broken by Bill O’Leilly on FOX news of all places. He would have been better off just waiting for the nigga Hussein outside the club, and sticking him for his Jesus piece like a regular ole jealous hater nigga would do, cause that was a “nigga moment” of the first order (shouts to my nigga McGruder).

Which brings me to the purpose of this rant, and the reason why I even bothered to address this foolishness in the first place. A whole lot of niggas (or niggERs depending on your vowel to consonant preference) will be out of a job if this nigga Obama actually makes it to the White House. The possibility of that happening becomes less outrageous, and more plausible with each passing day, as the voting electorate gets a chance to see the stark contrast between Alzheimer’s John Mcsame and ya boy “smooth daddy jump shot” Barack Hussein.

You Wanna Be A High Roller

July 7, 2008 – 6:14 pm

High Rollers

The 1st issue of High Rollers (written by Gary Phillips, and illustrated by Sergio Carrera) is out now, and gets the magnifying glass treatment by Jeff Marsick over at Newsarama. Jeff seems to like his black narratives down and dirty as he writes:

Novelist Gary Phillips aims to paint a picture of the underbelly of the Los Angeles underworld, “showing us The Dark Side of the American Dream”. Unfortunately, what gets depicted is more like The Dark Side of Beverly Hills; perhaps 90211. Everything is pretty and clean…If anything, the characters are culled from an episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and if this is what the “underbelly” of Los Angeles is like, then I’m on the first flight out.

I took some time out to read High Rollers and it was a fairly quick read, which can be good and bad. I did feel that the situations progressed at a lightning pace and some characters weren’t necessarily fleshed out, but I don’t share the reviewers fetish for seeing the grimy aspect of La La since that isn’t the only accurate portrayal of gangster life that exists.

Fantasy Dime Fridays

June 27, 2008 – 8:45 pm

O RLY

Congratulations to Rihanna for being the first ultimate fantasy freakazoid for this Friday!! As any one with a television or radio knows, baby girl is damn near ubiquitous. Something about her is making me want to smash. Since I’m a leg man, she is definitely holding it down like a tornado in that department.
I just hope she doesn’t get too skinny like my ex-number one Angelina (more on her later).
If you think she deserves all the media burn coming her way thus far then holla. Until then
feast on the ferocity below. Felonious…

Don’t Hold Your Breath For New Wu Material

June 27, 2008 – 3:36 pm

With the Rza’s new solo album Digi-Snax already in stores, it seems like the Rza is keeping it moving. He discusses some of the trials and tribulations (aka drama) of recording 8 diagrams in this article. Some quotes:

“I don’t know, really, to tell you the truth,” Rza says. “Wu-Tang is forever, I think, and we’ll be making the same sounds, whether we make it together or separately. But as far as making an album together, I don’t know”.

“I wouldn’t want to get into a business relationship with the Wu-Tang Clan because it hurt my business, Universal Music’s business, the record business. It hurt a lot of people when they wouldn’t show up for music videos, for press. It (wastes) a lot of people’s money. A lot of people got fired — the guys don’t even know how many people got fired because of them.”

“That’s just not good business, and I’m a businessman. I need to keep my name clean, so I can go anywhere in the world and do anything and people know there’s professionalism behind it.”

Mr. Baby Rocks In New Video

June 25, 2008 – 7:29 pm

lamar hoke jr

Well known character actor Lamar Hoke Jr (aka Mr. Baby) is featured in the new Eric Hutchinson video Rock and Roll. The clip is well produced considering the fact it was shot outside a tiny theatre in Pasadena. Lamar has been batting .1000 lately with appearances in major studio releases like The Soloist and a featured role in the Gordon Alert production Weed Killer. To keep track of Mr. Baby’s appearances bookmark this site, and click on the products tab at the top of the page to purchase his semi-autobiographical work Conversations With Iceberg, for some more platinum game. Speculative to Operative Part 1

June 25, 2008 – 2:47 pm

This will be the inaugural post in what I would like to call the technique or “technology” section of the blog, although some people might prefer the word process. Every hump day-god willing, I’ll try to highlight some portion of my routine as far as it relates to the creation of this miracle we call artwork. Today I’ll be starting off with a couple of pages from my just released (as of May) manga Heavenshield. Fresh enough for you? Let’s go.

i won't miss

I typically begin all of my roughs on regular letter size ink jet paper with a Bic pen or similar ballpoint. I like the freedom to just bang em out in ink while I’m storyboarding because my strokes are looser, and also because it’s more fun ya heard? This is the flashback sequence where General Oz reminisces on how Sepulveda got the drop on him. I am working from a script here but some of the dialogue is ad-libbed straight onto the page. Hence, the ubiquitous potty mouth on Oz. (He’s the bad guy, I think.)
